Kasaan, Alaska is located on Kasaan Bay, on the SW coast of the Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Southeast Alaska Panhandle.  The village was established in the late nineteenth century when a salmon-packing plant operated there.  Haida Indians relocated to the area from “Old Kasaan,” on the Skowl Arm, and the post office, which was certified in 1900, was named for the old village.  A Tlingit Indian name, Kasaan, derives from "Kasi-an," meaning "pretty town," and is pronounced "Gasa'n" by the Haida.  Today, Kasaan is a Second-Class city with a population of 55.
